How We Rate Cars

WheelPedia ratings help car buyers compare vehicles using consistent, evidence-based criteria. Each rating considers how well a car performs in the areas that matter most during buying and ownership—not just horsepower, screen size, or marketing claims.

Our standard rating system covers:

The final WheelPedia Rating is shown on a 10-point scale. It reflects how well the vehicle meets the needs of its intended buyer and how it compares with other vehicles in the same market segment.

We score each vehicle across seven categories. Every category carries a set percentage of the overall rating.

Each category receives a score out of 10. We multiply that score by its assigned weight and combine the results to calculate the overall rating.

What Our Scores Mean

A score of 7.5 does not mean a car is poor. It means the vehicle performs well overall but may have drawbacks, missing features, a high price, or stronger competitors.

Ratings should always be considered alongside the vehicle’s price, trim, market, intended use, and the buyer’s priorities.

1. Safety

Weight: 20%

Safety receives the largest share of the WheelPedia Rating. We review both crash protection and the technology designed to prevent or reduce collisions.

Our safety assessment may consider:

  • Official crash-test results
  • Adult and child occupant protection
  • Side-impact and frontal-impact performance
  • Rollover resistance
  • Pedestrian and cyclist protection
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Lane-departure and lane-keeping systems
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Driver-monitoring systems
  • Airbag coverage
  • Headlight performance
  • Safety equipment available on entry-level trims
  • Open recalls or documented safety concerns

We use results from recognized testing bodies when available. In the United States, the NHTSA 5-Star Safety Ratings program assesses frontal, side, and rollover performance, while IIHS vehicle ratings cover crashworthiness and crash-avoidance performance.

For vehicles sold outside the United States, we may also consult Euro NCAP, ANCAP, ASEAN NCAP, Global NCAP, Latin NCAP, JNCAP, or another relevant regional authority.

We do not treat ratings from different testing programs as identical. Each organization uses its own tests, scoring rules, and model-year requirements.

A car is not assumed to be unsafe because it has not been tested. When official results are unavailable, we label the safety score as provisional or leave it unrated until enough reliable evidence is available.

2. Reliability and Ownership

Weight: 15%

The reliability and ownership score looks beyond the showroom. It considers how the vehicle is likely to perform as it ages and what owners may need to spend to keep it on the road.

We may assess:

  • Available reliability records
  • Powertrain history
  • Common mechanical or electrical problems
  • Recall history
  • Warranty coverage
  • Maintenance requirements
  • Repair complexity
  • Parts and service availability
  • Expected depreciation
  • Battery warranty and degradation concerns for electrified vehicles
  • Manufacturer support
  • Documented owner complaints and recurring fault patterns

A newly released model may not have enough long-term data for a firm reliability score. In that case, we examine the vehicle’s platform, engine, transmission, battery system, related models, warranty, and early service reports.

We clearly separate confirmed issues from isolated owner reports. Online complaints can reveal patterns, but individual complaints alone do not prove that a defect affects every vehicle.

Used-car reliability scores may vary by model year, engine, transmission, trim, and production location. Buyers should review the specific version they intend to purchase.

3. Performance and Driving

Weight: 15%

Performance is not judged by acceleration alone. A family SUV, compact commuter, pickup truck, luxury sedan, and sports car serve different purposes.

We consider:

  • Engine or motor output
  • Torque delivery
  • Acceleration
  • Transmission behaviour
  • Steering response
  • Braking
  • Ride quality
  • Handling and body control
  • Traction and all-wheel-drive performance
  • Towing or payload ability where relevant
  • Off-road ability where relevant

  • Suitability for the vehicle’s intended use

A small city car can earn a strong performance score without producing high horsepower if it feels responsive, predictable, and well suited to urban driving.

Likewise, a powerful vehicle can lose points if its braking, ride, transmission, or handling does not match its claimed purpose.

4. Comfort and Practicality

Weight: 15%

This category measures how easy the vehicle is to live with during daily use.

We assess:

  • Front- and rear-seat space
  • Seating comfort
  • Driving position
  • Visibility
  • Entry and exit
  • Cargo capacity
  • Cabin storage
  • Child-seat access
  • Interior layout
  • Control placement
  • Ride comfort
  • Cabin noise
  • Third-row usability where fitted
  • Bed, towing, or load practicality for trucks
  • Accessibility of charging or refuelling points
  • Suitability for families, commuting, travel, or work

Published cargo or passenger-volume figures do not always tell the full story. Cargo shape, seat-folding design, loading height, wheel-arch intrusion, and storage layout can make two similarly sized vehicles feel very different in normal use.

We compare practicality primarily with vehicles of a similar body type and price.

5. Fuel Economy, Efficiency, or Electric Range

Weight: 15%

The factors used in this category depend on the vehicle’s powertrain.

Gasoline and Diesel Vehicles

We may consider:

  • Official city, highway, and combined fuel-economy estimates
  • Engine size and output
  • Vehicle weight
  • Fuel grade requirements
  • Tank capacity
  • Estimated driving range
  • Available real-world consumption data

Hybrids and Plug-In Hybrids

We may also review:

  • Electric-only range
  • Battery capacity
  • Energy use
  • Fuel economy after the battery is depleted
  • Charging time
  • How easily the vehicle can operate efficiently in daily conditions

Electric Vehicles

EV assessments may include:

  • Official driving range
  • Energy consumption
  • Usable battery capacity
  • AC charging speed
  • DC fast-charging speed
  • Charging curve and consistency
  • Route-planning support
  • Battery preconditioning
  • Heat-pump availability
  • Range changes in cold or hot weather
  • Charging-port placement
  • Access to compatible public chargers

For U.S.-market vehicles, we use official fuel-economy and range data from the EPA and the Department of Energy where available. The EPA explains that vehicle manufacturers submit test data and that selected vehicles are also tested at its National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory. Official estimates can be checked through FuelEconomy.gov.

Laboratory ratings provide a common comparison point, but actual fuel use and EV range can change with speed, weather, traffic, tyres, payload, elevation, charging habits, and driving style.

6. Features and Technology

Weight: 10%

This score considers whether the vehicle provides useful, well-integrated technology at a reasonable price.

We review:

  • Infotainment quality
  • Screen clarity and response
  • Smartphone connectivity
  • Physical controls
  • Navigation
  • Digital instruments
  • Audio systems
  • Camera quality
  • Parking assistance
  • Driver-assistance technology
  • Over-the-air updates
  • Connected services
  • Charging and power outlets
  • Convenience features
  • Standard versus optional equipment
  • Subscription-based features

More screens do not automatically produce a higher rating. Controls should be easy to understand and use without placing unnecessary demands on the driver.

We also look at trim availability. A feature has less value if buyers must choose an expensive trim or package to get it.

7. Price and Value

Weight: 10%

Value is not the same as having the lowest price. We compare what buyers receive for the amount they are asked to pay.

This category may consider:

  • Starting price
  • Typical transaction price where reliable data is available
  • Standard equipment
  • Trim-level pricing
  • Warranty coverage
  • Running costs
  • Fuel or electricity costs
  • Maintenance expenses
  • Insurance considerations
  • Expected depreciation

  • Pricing against direct alternatives

A more expensive vehicle can receive a strong value score if it provides better safety, comfort, performance, warranty coverage, or ownership economics than similarly priced competitors.

Regional prices, taxes, incentives, and equipment can differ significantly. We identify the market and currency whenever possible.

We Compare Cars Within the Right Context

WheelPedia does not judge every vehicle against the same target.

A compact hatchback is not expected to provide the acceleration of a performance coupe or the cargo capacity of a large SUV. Instead, we ask:

  • Does the vehicle do its intended job well?
  • How does it compare with direct competitors?
  • Does its price match what it provides?
  • What compromises will the intended buyer notice?
  • Are its strengths useful in everyday ownership?

This class-based approach makes ratings more relevant to real buying decisions.

Model Ratings vs Trim Ratings

A WheelPedia model rating normally represents the vehicle as a whole, but differences between trims can affect the result.

Higher trims may add:

  • More powerful engines
  • Larger batteries
  • Longer or shorter driving range
  • All-wheel drive
  • Better safety equipment
  • Larger wheels
  • More comfortable seats
  • Extra driver-assistance systems

They may also cost much more or return lower fuel economy.

When the differences are substantial, we may publish separate trim or powertrain ratings. Otherwise, the page explains which version offers the best balance and which versions carry important compromises.

New, Redesigned, and Unrated Cars

Some vehicles reach the market before independent crash tests, long-term reliability data, or full ownership information become available.

For these models, WheelPedia may:

  • Publish an initial provisional rating
  • Rate only categories supported by reliable evidence
  • Mark the vehicle as “Not Yet Rated”
  • Revise the score when new test results or ownership data appear

We do not fill evidence gaps with unsupported assumptions.

Are WheelPedia Ratings Based on Road Tests?

WheelPedia ratings may combine verified specifications, official test data, independent assessments, ownership evidence, and first-hand evaluation where available.

We do not claim to have personally driven or instrument-tested a vehicle unless the page clearly states that such testing took place.

If a rating is based mainly on research rather than a WheelPedia road test, it should be read as an evidence-based editorial assessment—not a substitute for a personal test drive or professional vehicle inspection.

How Ratings Are Updated

Vehicle information changes after launch. Manufacturers adjust prices, features, trim structures, software, powertrains, and warranty terms. New recalls, crash results, and reliability patterns may also appear.

We may update a rating when:

  • A vehicle receives new crash-test results
  • Pricing or standard equipment changes
  • A recall or safety investigation is announced
  • New reliability evidence becomes available
  • A software update changes important functions
  • Fuel-economy or range figures are revised
  • The model receives a major mechanical or design update
  • Stronger or weaker competitors enter the market

A score may rise or fall after publication. Where practical, the page includes a reviewed or updated date.
